The next day at four o’clock Greg Povlich called the Mathews’ residence. Sally Anne had just returned home from school.

“Sally Anne, I wanted to follow up with you about yesterday’s meeting with Dr. Hurst and Mr. Schmitt,” Greg said in a civil tone. “Do you want me to proceed to finalize the adoption?”

She was silent.

“Sally Anne, are you there?”

“Yes.”

“How would you like to proceed?”

“I would…” Sally Anne said, trying to find the right words. “I would like more time to think about my options.”

The adoption attorney didn’t like her ominous tone.

“I understand,” Greg responded sympathetically. “This is a big step you’re taking. Please take a couple of days to decide how you would like to me to proceed. Also, talk it over with your parents.”

“Yes, Mother is a good listener even though she is just a housewife.”

Greg called Dustin on his cell phone after talking with Sally Anne. He told Dustin he should have Sally Anne’s answer within a couple of days. When Greg hung up, he shook his head. His experience as an adoption attorney told him this adoption was never going take place.
